(un)familiar surroundings

Sam, our 9 year old, 1 year old and Paula occupied a disused space in the Castle Markets in Sheffield. This was conceived of as a discursive site, an entry point to think through, by occupation for a limited time, the politics of empty or disused space. Castle Markets is an indoor market in Sheffield. The area has been the subject of redevelopment proposals since the 1980s, but the original scheme to replace the markets ended with the recession in the 1990s. Many of the units, retail and office, have been vacant and empty for some time. We spent a day in one of the units and during our occupation worked there, ate, played, talked, taught, did homework, looked after children, and slept.
